Lebo’s Soweto Bicycle tour: Kliptown

In the early 1900’s people were moved to the area called Klipspruit Valley and Kliptown. Here, people from all races shared the land. During Apartheid this was the only area around Johannesburg where African people could own a piece of land. In 1955 anti-Apartheid organisations, fighting for democracy in South Africa gathered and signed the Freedom Charter, today the Charter forms the country’s constitution. Despite developments in Soweto, the residents of Kliptown still lives under unfair conditions where basic services such as housing, electricity and water are urgent issues. Yet, there are many people in the community who fight for their rights and create facilities, especially for the young ones. Soweto Kliptown Youth, SKY, is an organisation working in the area, engaging youth in arts and culture activities such as theatre and dance, education, and creating a more positive life style.

On the bicycle tour you will cycle through the area of Kliptown together with a guide living in the area. You will learn more about Kliptown’s history, meet people from the area and learn about life today. You will also have the opportunity to meet leaders and youth members of SKY and be introduced to their work and activities.

This tour will give you an alternative, up close and personal experience of Soweto and Kliptown.

Tour starts 1.00pm
Price: R250 per person – Minimum 2 Participants.

The price excludes:
Additional drinks and snacks.

Second time in Soweto, many others to follow. This backpacker feels like home. June 16 was fantastic and the bike tour taught me so much, I assumed I knew Soweto already (a little). Credits must be given to you all that make this backpacker running so nicely and friendships arise so quick! Sala Kahle!

Soweto Backpackers
Hi Ken, Lebo and Themba, Hope you are well. I am finally back in Oz, after a great (but very whirlwind) tour of Africa. Soweto was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. I just wanted to say thanks and let you know how much I enjoyed it. It was such an enlightening and educating experience, to be able to stay in the township. You really enabled me to see things through different eyes. I am sure I will be back to see you on my next trip to SA! I have some photos of you guys, Lebo and Themba, which I will send you when I have all my photos developed. I really want to write to the Lonely Planet, and any other guide books now and reccommend the backpackers and tour - will let you know how I get on. If any of you guys ever come to Oz, let me know and you will be most welcome at my place. Cheers, Amy
