Situated 1.5 hours from Johannesburg and 1 hour from Pretoria, we are located in the beautiful Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve, which is home to some of the oldest mountain ranges. They’ve been standing for 2500 Million years, and now you can glide down them, enjoying their unique ecosystem.
Eleven platforms have been built against the cliffs and rock faces of the kloof and are joined by long steel cables that clients slide along to reach the next platform. Much like a “foefie” slide, the canopy tour essentially involves zigzagging down the kloof while stopping at each platform to admire the expansive views and surrounding ecology.
The bird sightings are also great in this area and your guides will be able to point out interesting sightings and share information from the shy klipspringer or the endangered black eagle.
Two trained canopy guides assure the safety of each participant while describing interesting facts about the indigenous plants, ecology and geology of the area.
Included in your fee (on top of the 2.5 hour tour) is all the equipment, the 4×4 return trip up mountain, safety briefing and a light meal and refreshments.
We are also available for corporate events and team building!
So come along, zip along the beautiful scenic canopy of the Magaliesberg Mountains! The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is a unique eco-adventure that takes clients on a 2,5-hour tour down the spectacular Ysterhout Kloof, set in the ancient Magaliesberg Mountains. Two trained canopy guides assure the safety of each participant while describing interesting facts about the indigenous plants, bird life, ecology and geology of the area.
Canopy tours originated in the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, where adventurous biologists erected a system of cables through the canopy layer of the forest in order to observe the fauna and flora in that previously inaccessible region. The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is the third of its kind in South Africa, alongside the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour just outside Plettenberg Bay and the Karkloof Canopy Tour outside Howick in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands.
Why a canopy tour in the Magaliesberg?
The Magaliesberg Mountains are 2,400 million years old, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour provides an unforgettable eco-experience amongst the plants and animals of this ancient range.
The experience begins with a briefing session at the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour offices where you will be tutored on the do’s and don’ts during the tour. You will also be kitted out with your harness, safety helmet, and sliding glove and will be given an opportunity to ask your guide questions. Tour parties are restricted to a maximum of eight persons in order to ensure maximum enjoyment by all participants.
After the briefing session, you will be transported up the mountain over a distance of two kilometres to the first platform. This is where your unforgettable, unmatchable adventure begins – enjoy the ride!
Refreshments are served during the canopy tour and the same vehicle will be ready to pick you up as you exit from the last platform.
Once you are back at the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour offices you can place your meal order at the Hadeda Restaurant and Bar adjacent to the office before freshening up.
After lunch, you are welcome to stay and make use of some of the impressive facilities available at the Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa. Bookings at the popular Spa are essential. All canopy tours guests may make use of the large hotel swimming pool after the tour, or simply stick around for a drink at the Hadeda Bar and tell someone about your unique experience!
The Sparkling Health Spa
Owned and managed by Lida Engels, the luxurious Sparkling Health Spa opened for business on 15 December 2003. It is the largest and most modern facility of its kind in the NorthWest Province and, like Sparkling Waters Hotel, the Health Spa’s motto is “Value for Money” (without compromising luxury and comfort), “Home from Home” and “Never say No.”
Since opening, the spa has been exceptionally well patronised and we believe the addition of the Sparkling Health Spa has added a new dimension to our already unequalled array of facilities.
History of the Canopy Tour
The Canopy Tour concept originated in the lush rainforests of Costa Rica where adventurous biologists devised a system of cables and platforms in order to study the diversity of wildlife that habituates the upper canopy level of this previously inaccessible eco-system. It wasn’t long before this developed into a breath-taking eco-tourism activity that not only allowed people to enter and experience the upper realm of a rainforest, but raised awareness of the plight and beauty of the world’s endangered indigenous forests.
The first Canopy Tour in South Africa was built in the Tsitsikamma Forest at Storms River over 10 years ago. This popular eco-tourism activity has now expanded to include 7 diverse locations across the country including the Cape, Tsitsikamma, Karkloof, Drakensberg, Magoebaskloof and even Malalotja in Swaziland.
At 2,400 million years of age, the Magaliesberg mountains are the second oldest in the world. There is simply no eco friendlier way to explore the magnificence of this ancient wonderland than the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour.
