“Let’s Ride!
When Horse Riding for either novices or ‘old hands’ there are few places in the world you can ride in an area as unspoiled or beautiful as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, KZN. All our rides are accompanied by a lead and back up rider allowing us to split the group at times to be able to cater each ride to each individuals experience level.

From the water’s edge of the Indian Ocean, through the game reserve to the shores of Lake St Lucia Estuary; experience game viewing with a difference…

Bhangazi Horse Safaris operates horseback riding trails and safaris from St Lucia, in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetland Park), situated in Zululand, Kwa- Zulu Natal, South Africa and is the only concessionaire for horse safaris in the park.

Transfers can be arranged to and from our stables from any accommodation in St Lucia. Beach Rides:
Our beach rides start at the Main Beach in St Lucia kilometers of clean white sand with the Indian Ocean rolling in alongside.

We take the horses down to the waters edge and head either north towards First Rocks or south towards the St Lucia Estuary, riding alongside.

During the whale season (June-Nov) we often see humpbacks breaching out in the deeper water on their way to their breeding grounds in Mozambique. From November to February we search for the tracks of turtles who dug their nests above the high tide mark in the warm sand the night before.

The rest of the year we have to make do with dolphins playing in the surf, hippo pods relaxing in the estuary, crocodiles sunning themselves on the sandy banks or just the amazing views along the beach, amongst the highest forested sand dunes in Africa.

Our beach rides are low tide dependent and can only take place 2 hours either side of low tide.

Children must be over 8 years old for a beach ride. Riders must be under 95 kg.

Game Rides:
Our game rides begin at Iphiva, a 5-minute drive from the center of St Lucia.

From here we ride into the Game Reserve on the southern end of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park where we ride alongside zebra, wildebeest, bushbuck, warthog, duiker, impala etc with occasional sightings of rhino, buffalo and our elusive leopard.

By being so unobtrusive on horseback, we are able to view game from just meters away without interrupting their normal behavior.

This is the perfect start for a novice, children or game viewing enthusiasts, as it is a gentle ride with lots of interest along the way.

Our game rides can take place at any time of day that suits you.

Children must be over 6 years old for a game ride.
Riders must be under 95 kg.

Beach and Game Combo
The beach and game combo ride is 2.5 hours of horseback adventure where you experience the best of the game reserve and the beach!

Children must be over 8 years old for a beach ride. Riders must be under 95 kg.

Tailor Made Safaris
Looking for something a bit different? We can also offer you honeymoon/proposal safaris, birding safaris (with a qualified birding guide) and photographic (with a qualified photography teacher) safaris.

Our Horses
We have mostly Boerperd horses with some Thoroughbreds and Boerperd Arab crosses.

Boerperds are a South African breed of horse, probably of Arab-Barb descent and also Java horses, the first horses to come to South Africa from Indonesia when the Dutch arrived in South Africa around 1653.

These developed into the Cape Horse that was then crossed with English Thoroughbreds.

These horses are known for being strong, hardy and well muscled, usually 14.0hh to 15.3hh, sure-footed and to have kind temperaments and generous natures. The horses were widely ridden by the Boer soldiers in the Anglo Boer war of 1899 to 1902.

Our Tack
On Safaris we ride our horses in the English style of riding and we use mostly Leon Liversage Trail Rider and other suitable Trail saddles. It is our priority that each horse has a well-fitting saddle and that is why we, unfortunately, can’t easily change the saddle, because we don’t want our horses to get sore.

The Leon Liversage Trail Rider saddles are developed for endurance riding and are extremely comfortable for both rider and horse. They are light but designed to spread weight well over the horses’ backs. They also have a high pommel and cantle which is helpful for our beginner riders.

Our English saddles are Wintec General Purpose Cair 2000, with each saddle fitted to an individual horse. We find these to be comfortable for both horse and rider.

Our horses use a variety of bridles and bits. These are chosen to suit each horse. Generally speaking, though most horses go in a single or double jointed snaffle. Some horses do better without a bit and therefore these horses have a bitless bridle.

Regrettably, we don’t allow even the most experienced rider to ride without a saddle or without stirrups.

All our horses live out to free graze year round and most are natural hoofed (unshod/barefoot ) as the terrain and temperate conditions are well suited to this. We like our horses to live as close to their natural ways as is possible.

Our horses are fit, regularly schooled in the English style and well kept.

Natural Horsemanship is practiced with our horses.

A jewel in KwaZulu Natal
The town boasts plenty of accommodation. From 5-star luxury lodges to BnB’s, hotels, self-catering, and backpackers, there is something to suit everyone.

St Lucia is small with everything from the main street, to the pristine beaches to the various walking trails are all within walking distance of your accommodation.

St Lucia has all the amenities one could need, with the main street adorned by restaurants, internet cafes, a bank, post office, curio shops, local markets, petrol station, and tourist information centers.

The day and night times are relaxed. The town is safe, with private security companies that patrol the area and a local police station. You only need to watch out for hippos, whom after spending the day in Lake St Lucia, emerge at night to graze on the luscious lawns of the streets of St Lucia!

As St Lucia is surrounded by the game park, it’s a daily occurrence to see a business of mongoose cross the street, a troop of monkeys grooming each other and the elusive leopard ambling on the outskirts of town…

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park boats the highest bird count in all of Africa, the southern-most breeding spots for turtles in Africa, Africa’s tallest forested dunes, the largest remaining stands of sand forest, the biggest peat beds in the Southern Hemisphere and vast wetlands…

All of this runs between the enormous St Lucia lake/estuarine system and alongside 220 kilometers of pristine beaches and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, where turtles nest, whales often pass on their way to breed just a little further north in Mozambique and dolphins play in the surf.

Outstanding features
In December 1999 UNESCO, the World Heritage Committee of the Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage chose the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (GREATER ST LUCIA WETLAND PARK) as the first South African UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This status confirms that St Lucia is a place of unique splendor that deserves to rank alongside great icons of the globe.

The Park covers a mosaic of landforms that have created a vast array of biomes to support a very wide variety of animals, plants, and birds.

Covering over 600,000 acres, from St Lucia in the South to the Mozambiquan border in the North, the diversity of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is spectacular.

The Park features:
• Biodiversity of 5 ecosystems
• Superlative natural phenomena
• Scenic beauty
• Flora and Fauna
• Ecological processes

Other outstanding features:

• The largest black rhino population in the world
• 220km of pristine coastline and beaches
• 25,000-year-old coastal dunes which are the tallest forested dunes in Africa
• The only major swamp forest left in the Southern Hemisphere
• 3 major lake systems (Lake St Lucia; Kosi Bay; Lake Sibaya)
• 4 RAMSAR wetlands
• A 45,000-year-old peat wetland

These are just some of the features of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which make this World Heritage Site so unique…”
