“Shark Volunteer Program

Blue Wilderness’ shark volunteer and shark intern participants learn snorkelling, diving and scientific techniques to collect data that is vital to the management of some of the world’s vulnerable shark species. As well as shark diving and snorkelling with five species of sharks, shark volunteers get the chance to work in the Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area, one of South Africa most pristine and important marine biodiversity hotspots. As a shark volunteer, you will directly contribute to the conservation, research and education programmes on Blue Wilderness’s shark volunteer and internship program.

Shark Scuba Dives

Are you ready to descend into the world of sharks on SCUBA? Then slip into the water for and come for a Shark Dive at Durban’s Aliwal Shoal for an encounter of a lifetime! Drift along with upwards of 20 blacktip sharks on a baited shark scuba trip

Floating weightless on a drift shark dive surrounded by upwards of 20 blacktip sharks may be viewed by the uninitiated as a nightmare! But we know that for SCUBA divers, this is the stuff of dreams! At our dive site, we love nothing more than drifting along with our guests, taking in all the antics of the blacktip sharks flocking around us.

On this dive, we typically descend down to between 4 and 8m, drifting over the shoal. This allows us to enjoy the fish life of the shoal below us, and the sharks all around us. Your shark Dive at Durban’s Aliwal Shoal often lasts upwards of an hour (for some reason it’s hard to get you guys back onto the boat!). The shallow depth we drift at, allows us to use our air sparingly.

After your Shark Dive at Aliwal Shoal, when we are all satiated and happy, it is a quick trip back to the Blue Wilderness Shark Centre, where we treat you to hot showers, a hot lunch, and all the comforts you need sit back; put your feet up and relax. It’s time to reminisce about your Shark Diving Aliwal Shoal adventure.

Raggered Tooth Shark Dive

Ragged-tooth sharks are also called sand-tigers. Ragged tooth sharks spend a lot of time patrolling the shallow reefs around Durban and Aliwal shoal, close to the sandy bottom the sharks rub their bodies on the sandy bottom to dislodge parasites and perhaps this could explain their alternate name? The Blue Wilderness team will get you up close and personal with ragged tooth sharks on a dive to the world famous ‘Raggie cave’. Here you can wait in mid-water outside the cave, so as not disturb the ragged tooth sharks. Most times, on the dive, you will view up to 12 sharks patrolling back and forth along the length of this long gash of a cave, as it slices sideways into the reef.

Ragged tooth sharks are very docile and are sometimes dubbed ‘tadpoles with teeth’ for their lackadaisical attitude to divers.  This SCUBA dive is best done on the Aliwal Shoal during the winter months from June to September. During this time, the male ragged tooth sharks hang around like a rash, all over the reef, waiting for females to arrive so that a mating-fest can take place.  SCUBA divers can come across multiple sharks at various places on their dive on the Aliwal Shoal.

Sardine Run South Africa

Are you ready to discover, dive and experience South Africa’s Sardine Run – the world’s greatest marine event? If the answer is yes, then you have to join Blue Wilderness on our next Sardine Run expedition. Here you will open yourself to one of the world’s most challenging but rewarding SCUBA diving expeditions!

South Africa’s Sardine Run

The Sardine Run in South Africa is recognized as one of the world’s most spectacular marine events. Annually, from May to July, vast shoals of sardines migrate from their temperate-water home off South Africa’s southern coast and travel north-east into the sub-tropical coastal waters of the Wild Coast. Following the shoals is an unparalleled concentration of marine predators including seabirds; sharks; game fish and marine mammals.

When predators meet prey, a feeding event of unmatched proportions begins. Thousands of common dolphins charge after the shoals, separating them into densely packed bait balls and driving them to the surface. Watched by the omnipresent Cape gannets, an aerial assault on the sardines occurs when tens of thousands of gannets begin their spectacular plunge diving displays. Below the birds, the bait balls are easy pickings not only for dolphins, but also for shivers of bronze-whaler, dusky and blacktip sharks. The final player, is the behemoth Bryde’s whale. Its huge mouth can decimate an entire bait ball in a single lunge.

In the late 90′s, Blue Wilderness pioneered diving expeditions to follow and film the Sardine Run. We were instrumental in epic productions such as the Emmy Award winning BBC film “The greatest shoal on Earth”. Today our team continues to annually track the Sardine Run. We are always developing new detection technologies; perfecting our observer network and retro-fitting our vessels to ensure we can again experience the world’s greatest marine event.
