We specialize in a variety of horse trails and horse riding adventures which will allow you to experience the splendor of the Western Cape near Cape Town, South Africa. These horseback riding adventure trails vary from half day trails to a comprehensive 3-day horse trail through the magnificent Berg River Valley. Our riding trails are aimed at experienced riders, however, novices are welcome on trails of up to a maximum of 2 hours long. We can accommodate up to 8 riding guests, allowing us to give you personal attention.

Even if you are not inclined to horseback riding, we have a range of private tours and specialized outings including garden tours, walking and hiking tours, wine, olive, olive oil, and cheese tasting and vineyard tours, scenic drives, etc. Here at Fynbos Trails, we specialize in the beautiful Western Cape Boland and its Winelands on horseback. We supply a number of trail options to suit various tastes and budgets, from luxury trails with all meals in quality accommodation to our ‘budget’ alternative based on a very good local bed and breakfast establishment which allows guests to select dinners to suit their tastes and pockets.

Climate:
Summer: Very hot and dry with some cooler days (November to March).
Winter: Mild with perfect riding weather, wet in July (May to September).
Spring & Autumn: The best time, mild with occasional showers.

Dress:
Jodhpurs or leather chaps, safe footwear (with a heel), hard hat (not compulsory) but recommended. (A limited number of old style riding hard hats are available for our guests to use.) Wide brimmed sun hat or cap, sunglasses, rain jackets, warm top for evenings. Insect repellent and sunscreen could come in handy. Bathing suit and beach towel if you wish to have a lunchtime swim.

Riding Ability:
All riding guests should be experienced riders and should be riding fit. (Riders should be confident at the rising trot and canter and able to cope with long hours in the saddle.) Novices are welcome on trails of up to a maximum of 2 hours long. We are unfortunately not able to provide riding lessons.

Size:
All riding guests need to please state approximate weight and height when booking to allow us to allocate a suitable mount. Please note that there is a weight limit of 100kg on riders.

Please use the Quote and Booking Request Form to request a quote or make a booking. When booking for a party of guests, please get each member of the party to supply details of their specific interests, dietary requirements, fitness levels etc. either through the use of the quote/booking form or via email. This will allow us to ensure that everyone has the best possible experience.

These horse trails are designed for those who wish to experience the beauty and wonder of the Winelands with an all-inclusive luxury equestrian vacation in the Western Cape. The focus is on riding through our local mountain fynbos, vineyards and olive orchards. Guests are taken to wine farms, an olive producer and also get to taste some of the excellent local cuisines. At the end of each day is a chance to relax at Diemersfontein Country House, a top class guesthouse with all the comforts of home, while providing the tranquillity of the Berg River Valley.

Two and Three Day Trails:
Enjoy the breathtaking scenic beauty of the Berg River Valley winding through the unspoiled Hawequa Mountains, with pit stops for the tasting of excellent local wines, olives, and olive oil. Lazy evenings can be spent watching the sunset while your horse frolics in the fields below the historic guest farm.

Sample Itinerary (3 Day Trail):
Day One
Guests should arrive at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate by 13h30 at the latest (transfers can be arranged at additional cost). After settling, in riders are given wine tasting at the Diemersfontein Cellar at 14h30. After the wine tasting, guests are taken to the stables and are introduced to their horses, leaving at 15h00 (16h00 in summer) for a 2-3 hour outride into the mountains to get accustomed to their mounts. Sundowners (for your account) are at Diemersfontein Country House followed by dinner at the Seasons Restaurant at Diemersfontein.

Day Two
Riders leave the Diemersfontein stables at 08h30 and ride to Klein Rhebokskloof for wine, olive oil, and olive tasting. We then proceed to Bovlei Cooperative Winery for tasting. Then visit Redemption Leather Shop (optional). Enter Bovlei area and taste wine at De Compagnie and/or Nabygelegen. We proceed into the Maze Valley to Doolhof for wine tasting. Ride past historic Huguenot farms to Oude Wellington Wine Estate for tasting and lunch at Oude Wellington Restaurant. Scenic ride through farms and fynbos back to Diemersfontein. Arrive at stables at 17H00 and later have dinner at the Seasons Restaurant.

Day Three
After breakfast at the guesthouse, we leave the stables at 08h00 for a four-hour scenic trail through fynbos hills, buchu farms, and olive groves. If party consists of 4or more riders we provide olive, tapenade and olive oil tasting in an olive grove. We return to the stables at 12h30 for a light lunch served at the Seasons Restaurant. After lunch, we set out for another 2-hour scenic trail at 16H00. We will arrive back at the stables at 18H00. Dinner at Diemersfontein.
Day Four
This morning you have a chance to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and if you wish, an opportunity to say farewell to your trusty steed, or for those not in a rush to get back to a faster-paced lifestyle, there is the option of spending some of the mornings exploring some of the other paths in the area on horseback (Optional – NOT included in price).

Budget Horse Trails
These horse trails are designed for those who wish to experience the beauty and wonder of the Winelands from horseback on a limited budget. The focus is on riding through our local mountain fynbos, vineyards and olive orchards. Guests are taken to wine farms, an olive producer and also get to taste some of the excellent local cuisines. At the end of each day, guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the foothills of the Limietberg mountains in the comfortable and friendly Bakkies Bed and Breakfast.

Two and Three Day Trails:
Enjoy the breathtaking scenic beauty of the Berg River Valley winding through the unspoiled Hawequa Mountains, with pit stops for the tasting of excellent local wines, olives, and olive oil. Lazy evenings can be spent exploring the local Boland or just lazing at the comfortable bed and breakfast. Please note that these trails do not include transport between Bakkies Bed and Breakfast and Diemersfontein stables.

Sample Itinerary (2 Day Trail):
Day One
Riders must arrive at the Diemersfontein stables in time to leave at 08h30 and ride to Klein Rhebokskloof for wine, olive oil, and olive tasting. We then proceed to Bovlei Cooperative Winery for tasting. Then visit Redemption Leather Shop (optional). Enter Bovlei area and taste wine at De Compagnie and/or Nabygelegen. We proceed into the Maze Valley to Doolhof for wine tasting. Ride past historic Huguenot farms to Oude Wellington Wine Estate for tasting and lunch at Oude Wellington Restaurant. After breakfast at the bed and breakfast, we leave the stables at 08h00 for a four-hour scenic trail through fynbos hills, buchu farms, and olive groves. If party consists of 4or more riders we provide olive, tapenade and olive oil tasting in an olive grove. We return to the stables at 12h30 for a light lunch served at the Seasons Restaurant. After lunch, we set out for another 2-hour scenic trail at 16H00. We will arrive back at the stables at 18H00.

Day / Half Day Horse Trails
These horse trails are designed for those who want to spend time in the Western Cape Winelands with a difference. We give our guests the opportunity to travel to a number of wine farms on horseback, stopping to enjoy tasting the various wines en-route. Alternatively, we can focus on the fynbos and scenery and spend more time in the foothills of the Limietberg Mountains. Either way, you will experience the beauty and the wonder of the Cape Winelands.

WE USE ENGLISH SADDLES, NOT WESTERN, SO RIDERS ON LONG TRAILS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO THE RISING TROT

Full Day Trails:
Wine Tasting Trail
We leave the stables at 08h30 and ride through the vineyards of two historic wine farms. Guests then have the opportunity to indulge in some wine tasting at two old Huguenot farms. The ride continues through the local vineyards for wine, olive and olive oil tasting at Klein Rhebokskloof; a boutique wine and olive estate. We stop for a light lunch in the middle of the day to give riders and horses a break during the hottest period. The ride continues through the vineyards and olive orchards back to the starting point at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate in the late afternoon.

Wine and Fynbos Trail
We leave the stables at 08h30 and take a picturesque route through the vineyards and across some scenic farms. Guests then have the opportunity to indulge in some wine, olive and olive tasting at one or two of the local estates. We stop for a light lunch, at a local estate. We then ride on into the foothills of the Limietberg Mountains and ride through the local fynbos on the return journey. The ride returns to the stables at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate in the late afternoon.
Full day trail – 6-7 hours riding
A) The 4 hour scenic ride described in A above, a lunch stop at Seasons Restaurant followed by a 2 and a half hour scenic ride in a different direction.

B) A full day ride through the wine farms with 2 tastings at the estates mentioned in B and lunch at either Doolhof or Oude Wellington (R20pp per tasting extra. No charge for holding horses)
All lunches a la carte and wine tasting at Diemersfontein optional after lunch

Half Day Trails / Short Trails:
One to three hour trails
A one to three hour scenic trail with stunning views through the Diemersfontein Estate vineyards to neighbouring farms through vine and herb plantations, fynbos and olive groves against the mountain slopes.
NOVICES SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT MORE THAN 1-2 HOURS. Walk, trot and canter will be done with those that are able to. A wine tasting can be fitted in along the way (R20 – R25 pp per tasting, R90pp per hour to hold horses added to riding time)

Four hour (half day) Trail

FOR RIDING FIT, EXPERIENCED RIDERS ONLY
(Walk, trot and canter will be done)
A) A circular scenic ride through the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains past vineyards, olive groves, herb plantations to a waterfall at Cascade Manor and back.

B) A scenic wine tasting ride through the wine farms with one tasting at either Doolhof Wine Estate, Welvanpas, Dunstone or Bosman Family Vineyards depending on availability or choice of riders. (R20pp extra for tasting, R90pp to hold horses)
