Highover is an eco-adventure destination in KwaZulu Natal that offers you an adrenalin rush as you shoot white river rapids, experience the thrill of seeing the endangered blue swallows in flight, opt to enjoy the spectacular indigenous tree trail or relax with a good book. A base from which to explore the Southern Natal Midlands. This might include Sani Pass, trips on the Steam Trains, Byrne Village, the Southern Berg and the Umkomaas Valley. Highover Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the scenic Hele Hele (Hella Hella) route between Richmond and Donnybrook. The nature reserve straddles the Mkomazi River and has approx 11km of river frontage. Highover is 3 000ha in extent and adjoins the Soada State Forest which comprises approximately 500ha of spectacular mist belt forest. Highover has Natural Heritage Status (Natural Heritage Site No 44) on account of its scenic beauty and numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. Dramatic landscapes comprising cliffs and mountain tops, waterfalls and rocky river beds, steep forest-clad gulleys, rolling plains, clear star-strewn night skies, and ethereal morning mists combine to make Highover a magnificent destination. Our rustic Bushcamp offers a variety of accommodation to suit your budget from lodge, riverside cottages, and chalets to bunkhouses and camping.
Offers the visitor accommodation in a very special atmosphere, it sleeps 10 people, is fully equipped, and boasts a unique outdoor bathroom with a spectacular view of the HeleHele Kop. It has its own private boma and spacious lapa. A unique lodge with an intriguing blend of African architecture and decor.Rooms: a Double story with 3 bedrooms upstairs and a bedroom downstairs with bed linen, please bring your own bath and swimming towels. Highover is the place to have an uninterrupted ‘bosberaad’, conference or workshop with a stunning bushveld ambiance without interruptions of traffic noise, cell phones etc. Our central lapa with a wooden viewing deck overlooking the mighty Mkomazi River offers this ideal bushveld setting. Our central location makes us an attractive venue; less than an hour’s drive from Pietermaritzburg and one and a half hours from Durban. River Rafting at Hella Hella – this is entirely dependent on river levels. Contact Luke on 066 472 4227 •Canoeing – The Mkomazi River is home to the Umkomaas Canoe Marathon and offers some of the best canoeing water in the country. Accommodation and on-site transport available including drop-offs and pick-ups by prior arrangement only and for a small fee (subject to availability of drivers). Bring your own canoe.•Foefie slide – Try the thrill and rush of the foefie slide. Equipment for hire. •Fly Fishing – Catch and release fly fishing for the Natal Yellow Fish in autumn and winter. •Swimming – There are some lovely spots where you can swim. Alternatively, relax and suntan at the water’s edge.
HIKING & RAMBLING:
Numerous trails, paths, and tracks traverse Highover offering the visitor the opportunity to appreciate the diversity of habitat, the scenically spectacular landscape, and the rare animal and plant life. Highover is proud to be a joint winner of National Sappi Tree-Trail 2002 competition. Please enquire at Reception for our Tree List. Farm maps with hiking trails also available at Reception. Hiking trails range from challenging climbs to gentle rambles. Try our 18km Soada Falls Hike, the 2km Spectacular Tree Trail Ramble, the Aloe Amble or the Plateau Trail 9.7km.•Scenic Soada Fall hike (a day hike – 5 to 8 hours approx 18km hike, not too strenuous, but not for the faint-hearted).•Sappi Tree Trail (a gentle 1.5 to 2-hour stroll)•Plateau Trail (A challenging 9.7km hike)•Aloe Amble (gentle rambling)
Over 240 bird species have been recorded at Highover. We welcome day visitors, but to make the most of this top birding spot try booking into our lodge or riverside cottages or riverside chalets for a night or two. Highover is a must for the serious tree enthusiast.•National Sappi Tree Trail joint winner 2002•Over 140 species•Rare and unusual species like Vitex obovata wilmsi (White Vitex), Obetia tenax (Mountain Nettle) and the Sclerocarya birrea (Marula) and Boscia albitrunca (Shepherd’s tree) are both unusual species for this area.•Spectacular specimens can be seen of Commiphora harveyi (Red-stem Corkwood), Berchmia zeyheri (Red Ivory), Ficus thonningii (Common Wild Fig), Celtis Africana (White Stinkwood) or Harpephyllum caffrum (Wild Plum) to name but a few.•Easily accessible•Network of tree trails around the Bushcamp•Some trees are numbered•Tree lists and maps are available at Reception
4×4, QUAD & MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAILS:
Some 40kms of off-road and tracks are available for 4×4 enthusiasts and quad or mountain bikers to try their skills. Bring your own machines and come and enjoy yourselves. We can supply the accommodation and farm maps are available at the Reception.

Our vision as the Owners of Highover is to:•Eradicate poaching.•Nurture the endangered species i.e. the blue swallow, blue duiker, oribi, African rock python and samango monkey.•Increase the number of zebra, blesbok, impala, bushbuck, eland, reedbuck and mountain reedbuck.•Introduce new species in collaboration with KZN Wildlife e.g. waterbuck. We are thrilled that our anti-poaching efforts are being rewarded with more frequent sightings of relaxed animals. The reserve now boasts large herds of blesbok, reedbuck, impala and a growing number of zebra, bushbuck, and impala. We are now experiencing more frequent sightings of genet and aardwolf.
