Humpback Whale migration:

Each year we are extremely privileged to experience the annual migration of the Humpback Whales from their home in the Antarctic northwards to the warmer waters of Mozambique & Tanzania.

Females give birth to their calves in the warmer waters and during this migration, one can witness entire family groups traveling together or a mother and adolescent or simply males traveling together.

We can see the humpback whales making their northward migration to the warmer waters from as early as late May, early June and then starting with their migration back home southwards any time from early September until late November, sometimes into December.

During this time we witness some exceptional displays of breaching, spy hopping, lob tailing and some very vocal communication between individuals and family groups.

The humpback whale migration coincides with the annual sardine run.

Ocean experience trip:

We offer a 2-hour ocean experience trip year-round, outside of Sardine Runtime for anyone wishing to see the beautiful coastline from a boat.

Enjoy the thrill of a typical African surf launch and spend time out on the ocean viewing whatever Mother Nature has to offer at the time.

An ocean experience is a MUST DO thing. As it allows one to view scenery and places of interest that cannot be seen on foot.

Join us with the possibility of sighting our resident pod of Bottlenose dolphins, or the Humpback Whales if you are with us during June – November months.

There is also the possibility of spending time with our Oceanic birds etc.

After we have looked for whatever marine life is further out to sea, we typically head south and inshore towards Umgazana area where we stop and point out the places of interest, after which we head northwards towards Sugarloaf rock and then we continue up the coastline towards the third beach, Silaka Nature Reserve, Second beach, the Gap & Blowhole and the Cape Hermes lighthouse.

Our trip ends at First Beach where we head in through the surf and into the mighty Umzimvubu River mouth zone and into the river.

Photographic Excursion – Waterfall Bluff:

The Wild Coast boasts some beautiful, dramatic and rugged scenery and a trip from Port St John’s up north to Waterfall Bluff is one such trip.

This is a half day trip, departing quite early in the morning to beat the wind, passing some beautiful points of interest along the way, with a final stop at the majestic Waterfall Bluff, known to the locals as Mlambomkulu.

Points of interest along the way include the area of Poenskop, Ntafufu, Manteku, Shark Point and Mbotyi.  If conditions permit, we may even stop and take a look at a shallow wreck named the Mielieskerk.

Waterfall Bluff is one of our most famous waterfalls in this region and falls directly into the ocean.  The topography in this area is nothing short of breathtaking with all the rugged outcrops and changing topography.

Another photographers dream stop before reaching Waterfall Bluff is that of Cathedral rock and false cathedral.  When the sunlight is at the right angle, Cathedral Rock takes on a mystical, misty look, which when captured on camera, is why people return to this area time and again.  There are just no words to describe the beauty of this area.

We may even be fortunate enough to see our resident pod of Bottlenose dolphins up as far as this area.

We provide light refreshments for all our photographic excursion trips.

Photographic Excursion – Umgazana mangrove estuary system & Brazen Head:

A photographic excursion by sea to Umgazana mangrove estuary system & Brazen Head is a half day trip. departing quite early in the morning to beat any possible wind that may come up for the day.

Umgazana mangrove estuary system is the largest most southern mangrove estuary system on our coastline, housing red, white and black mangroves.

When ocean conditions permit, we enter the estuary system from the ocean and travel up into the estuary, which has many beautiful winding angles to it.

If visibility is good, it offers fabulous snorkeling prospects and is an easy snorkel.

Umgazana village itself is picturesque and a visit to the enormous cave, which is easily reached on foot, is a must do.

Brazen Head, slightly further south of Umgazana, is a great place to snorkel and the topography and scenery in this area is nothing short of stunning.

This trip is a photographer’s delight as we pass the area of Umgazi and head further south.

We offer light snacks and refreshments on this trip.

Please contact us if you would like a tailor-made package.

Port St. Johns River Cruise:

Port St. Johns River Cruise memories live on forever!

For eons, boats of all shapes and sizes have plied the waters of the Umzimvubu. The river has long served as the primary transport medium back in the days. Small ships were able to cross the bar at higher tides and enter the estuary, before the river was silted up, in the 60’s. Cruising up and down the meandering river has forever since become part of the Port St. Johns lifestyle.

The ultra-modern and cool looking version of the river cruiser is the Bobalong Barge, run by Offshore Africa.

Bobalong was built on our premises and we had loads of fun co-building her.

She is equipped with a great sound system and has toilet facilities onboard.

With a seating capacity of 30 people, Bobalong is suitable for a variety of functions.

Our most popular trip is the afternoon sundowner trip that departs at 4 pm in summer (September – April) and 3 pm in winter (May-August).  Trip duration is approximately 2 – 3 hours, depending on how much fun you are having.

Other trip types include team building, conferences, specialized itineraries, weddings, birthday bashes, full moon parties etc.  The sky is the limit on the river…………..
