Beach Horse Trails – Jeffreys Bay
Just 10 km outside Jeffreys Bay and 70 km from Port Elizabeth, between the Gamtoos and Kabeljous rivers, lies the farm Papiesfontein. Here, on this special piece of land, the unique combination of bush, river, and beach come together to offer you an unforgettable ride.
Experienced guides escort riders twice daily along the 13km circular route. The trail takes about two hours to complete, leading through beautiful fynbos coastal vegetation, towards the Gamtoos river with breathtaking views from the dunes and finally returning along a 6 km stretch of deserted beach. Here on this isolated beach, riders can canter their mounts in the shallows or have an exhilarating gallop on the sand.
The trail provides magnificent views of the area and affords ample opportunity to spot a variety of bird species, tortoises, bushbuck, plant and marine life. Imagine whale watching from horseback!

You may see seals basking in the sun and the rare African Black Oystercatcher is always to be found near the Gamtoos river mouth.

The guides escort every group and assist riders in selecting horses just right for their respective capabilities. This outride is ideal for intermediate and advanced riders, though in quiet times, we also accommodate first-timers and beginners. Experienced riders can choose not to go with a guide and have the freedom to explore the valley at their own pace. About Papiesfontein:
The name Papiesfontein has become synonymous with exciting beach horse rides on a pristine beach just outside Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Frankie & Esré Lötter have been farming this area since 1980 and run Papiesfontein Beach Horse Rides in addition to their cattle farm. They began the horse trails in 1996. Today they have 55 well-schooled and good-natured horses to choose from. We breed our own horses and we use a crossbred between the Boerperd and the Scottish Highland Pony. We have the only Scottish Highland Ponies in the country.

These beach horse rides have become such a popular item that they are now regarded as a “must-do” when visiting Jeffrey’s Bay.

Magical Horse Trails and Beach Rides
Author: Yvonne Craig

Experience beauty of the Eastern Cape coast from horseback with the gentle rhythm of your mount from Papiesfontein (Jeffreys Bay) bearing you along a winding, 13 km circular trail. Then feel at one with nature as you gallop along a magnificent stretch of white beach with the wind flying through your hair.

Experienced guides provide instruction on control and management of your horse before leaving the yard. You saddle up and start the trail which winds through indigenous coastal vegetation. Birdlife abounds and francolins scuttle away before you with loud protestation, while other feathered friends serenade you along the way. There is always the possibility of chancing upon a bushbuck, duiker, or some other form of wildlife.

The jeep track you follow leads to the Gamtoos River, winding its lazy way through farmlands and over rolling sand dunes down to the mouth and the beach. You can spend unlimited time in the saddle – just as well as time ceases to exist as you soak up the beauty of this pristine area. Looking east, massive dunes march along shimmering into the distance, forming a sharp contrast with the greens and blues of the sea.

Once you reach the beach the choice is yours, whether to splash along gently, admiring the seascape and hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare African Black Oystercatcher or to have the thrill of a breathtaking gallop along a 6 km stretch of isolated beach. Cantering along on the edge of the water and splashing through the waves is also highly recommended. Then it’s back to the stable.

Non-riders are also warmly welcomed. There are thousands of acres of open ground for walking and 6km of seafront.

The farm Papiesfontein is situated 10 km outside Jeffreys Bay, just half an hour’s drive to the west of Port Elizabeth on the seaward side of the R102.
