Following a successful career in Agriculture Business and Animal Health where I was privileged to work and travel to many parts of the world together with my family, my wife Elzabé and I have now decided to undertake the next part of life’s journey and set up Thorn Tree Bush Camp. “This being a life long dream.”

Thorn Tree Bush Camp is situated within the Dinokeng Big Five Game Reserve. We have the true nature lover in mind when having you as our guest, to come and experience the amazing African Bushveld and its beautiful animals, sunrises, sunsets and nature.

Our tented bush camps and tents is set up is such a way that you can enjoy the tranquillity of nature, where the stars are brighter at night. Here where lion roars, jackal bark, bush babies cry, owls’ screeches, insects sing and so much more that can be heard at night, while you sit outside next to your fire or lay down to rest.

At Thorn Tree Bush Camp, you get away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life, enjoy a true South African ‘braai’ under the stars with the sounds of the wild and nature surrounding you, with accommodation in one of our tented bush camps. Take a game drive to view the BIG 5. Come and experience South Africa’s beautiful sunrises and sunsets that colour the skies above with a pallet of brilliant colours.

We have given special attention to detail and comfort, when setting up our unique Bush Tented Camps, each with its own style and setting. All the camps and tents are set-up to offer an exclusive setting, catering for various group sizes. Accommodation:
Minimum stay is 2 nights over normal weekends, and three nights over long weekends
Arrival from 15:00, departure before 10:00
No day visitors
No loud noise allowed
Serviced during the week, no service over weekends except on special request

Fever Tree Tent / Koorsboom Tent:
If you like an intimate and relaxed stay, where you can get closer to the sounds of nature, we have the Fever Tree Tent (Koorsboom Tent) for you. The tent accommodates maximum 2 adults and 2 young children, it has a double bed and a bunk stretcher.

Buffalo Tented Camp / Wag-‘n-Bietjie Tented Camp:
If you are a group that like a breakaway with your friends and/or family, the Buffalo Thorn Tented Camp (Wag-‘n-Bietjie Tent Kamp) will be well suited for you, it accommodates 8 people. It consists out of 2 dome tents, a double tent and a kitchen tent, it has an 8 singles deluxe stretchers with mattresses, 2 per tent (room). (Additional dome tent for two can be set up at an additional cost)

Monkey Thorn Cottage / Apiesdoring Kothuis:
If you prefer a little bit more comfort, we have the Monkey Thorn Cottage (Apiesdoring Kothuis) for you; it accommodates 2 people and will make a romantic breakaway for two. On request a bunk stretcher can be added for maximum or 2 young children. The cottage has a queen size bed, an air conditioner and fan, en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, kitchenette (with small 2 plate stove and oven combo, microwave & toaster, bar fridge, etc.) and the necessary to cook and braai.

Umbrella Thorn Family Tent / Haak-en-Steek Familie Tent:
If you are a couple or family with children, the Umbrella Thorn Family Tent (Haak-en-Steek Familie Tent) is what you are looking for – it accommodates 2 adults and 2 children. It is a large Safari Lodge Tent with its own en-suite bathroom (outdoor open air bathroom) and has a king size bed (can also be made up as 2 singles) and 1 bunk bed and a kitchen tent kitted out with everything you need to cook and braai. (An additional stretcher can be used at an extra cost)

Black Thorn 4 Man Camp / Swarthaak 4 Man Kamp:
If you are 2 couples, or friends or a family of 4, the Black Thorn 4 Man Camp will be your choice, it consists out of 2 covered domes connected with a kitchen. The tent accommodates maximum 4 people; it has 4 deluxe stretchers with mattresses, 2 per tent.

Sickle Bush Tree Top Tent / Sekelbos Boomtent:
If you are a couple the Sickle Bush Tree Top Tent (Sekelbos Boomtent) is what you are looking for – it accommodates 2 adults. It is a luxury roof top tent (please take note you have to climb a ladder to get to your bed), it has a double ‘bed’ and a small tent room below. It is set up in the bush, overlooking some Sickle Bush, has its own kitchen that is kitted out with everything you need to cook and braai.

5 Russet Bush Rustic Tents / 5 Kierieklapper Plaasjapie Tente:
If you are a couple or a group you can book any, some or all of our Russet Bush Tents. The Russet Bush Tents accommodates 2 people per tent and are located in the bush area of the property. Four of the tents (Russet 1, 2, 3, and 5) have single beds and the other (Russet 4) has comfortable deluxe stretchers.

Karee Family Caravan/Tent Stand / Karee Familie Karavaan/Tent Staanplek:
Our Karee family stand allows for a maximum of 4 caravans/tents/trailers tents/rooftop tents on the site not exceeding 10 people on the site. It has shade, a power point, tap for water and a braai area/fire pit. Centrally located with the Karee trees providing a cool shaded area.

Waterhole Trailer/Tent Stand/Campsite / Watergat Trailer/Tent Staanplek/Kampeerplek:
Our Waterhole (Watergat) stand allows for a maximum of 2 tents/trailers tents/rooftop tents on the site not exceeding 6 people on the site. It has shade, a power point, tap for water and a braai area/fire pit. Located next to the fence overlooking the bush and small waterhole.

Elephant Root Luxury Tent / Olifantswortel Luukse Tent:
If you prefer a little bit more luxury in you tent and want a romantic weekend getaway, we have the Elephant Root Luxury Tent (Olifantswortel Luukse Tent) just for you; it accommodates 2 people (a couple) and will be your glamping breakaway for two. This tent has a queen size bed, en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, kitchenette (with a single electric plate, microwave & kettle, bar fridge, etc.) and the necessary to cook and braai. More privately situated with view over the bush.

Included in the accommodation package is one free two hour guided game drive per person per 2 night’s stay. (Excludes snacks, day visitor package, and night drives)

Day Visitor Guided Safari Game drive:
Join us for day trip from Pretoria – package includes a bush fire-side coffee upon arrival, then climb on board our open game vehicle for your 3 hour game drive, taking you through the Dinokeng Game Reserve’s landscapes – in search of the big five game – African elephant, buffalo, both black and white rhino, lion and leopard. Not forgetting other species such as birds, rhinoceros beetles, leopard tortoise, and listening to interesting facts and stories about the fauna and flora of the bush veld.

Bush Walks – Early Moring:
By appointment only; minimum of 4 people, maximum of 8 people per walk
For our more adventurous guests we also offer a walk on the wild side – experience up close the sights, sounds and smells of the African bush veld. Sightings may include animals, birds and plants which are often missed in a vehicle or on a game drive. Two hour walks in the bush along with qualified and field guides.

Night Drive:
Minimum of 4 people
Night drives leave Thorn Tree Bush Camp at 18:30 and travel along bush tracks shining some light on nocturnal animals such as owls, jackal, bush babies and many other fascinating creatures of the night. Night drives are very special, highly enjoyable and a recommended experience.
