Heia Safari Ranch in the Cradle of Humankind outside Johannesburg is a three-star family-friendly hotel and conference centre. Located at the foot of the Swartkop Mountain Range, this sanctuary offers guests a tranquil getaway in the African bushveld. Watch zebra and giraffe graze from the comfort of your thatched bungalow before heading to the picturesque restaurant and pool area for breakfast, lunch or supper. Other animals that can be spotted here are Wildebeest, Blesbok, Impala, “Zonky” (Heia’s fascinating Zebra-Donkey cross-breed) and three black Springbok which roam the grounds freely. Game drives take you through one of the neighbouring game reserves nestled at the foot of the Swartkop Mountains where you can spot 22 varieties of game. One of the largest hand-built stone dams on the African continent, Lake Heritage, is situated on the property and is ideal for fishing, canoeing, and swimming. There is also a 15km mountain bike trail catering for beginners and intermediate riders, with plenty of berms, drop offs, switchbacks and gap jumps for advanced riders too.
AccommodationThe thatched, stone buildings are practically built to ensure cool respite from the African sun. Each building has Wi-fi connectivity. Each one of the 50 two-bedroomed bungalows have en suite bathrooms and modern amenities and also boast a wraparound verandah from which guests can admire the expanse of Lake Heritage and the Highveld, as well as spot an abundance of wildlife. The attractive hotel complex and conference centre consists of thatched stone buildings surrounded by beautifully landscaped lawns.
Conference and wedding venueThe Heia conference centre consists of three air-conditioned rooms that can accommodate up to 100 delegates and four smaller meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 10 guests in each. On-site facilities include toilets, telephone facilities and high-speed internet. There are also additional conference rooms in the main hotel building. The expansive grounds and proximity to the lake make Heia an ideal choice for team building events as well as providing the perfect backdrop for a romantic wedding of up to 100 guests.
RestaurantThe thatch-roofed restaurant is open 7 days a week for guests and day visitors and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with buffet and a la carte options available. The large windows provide diners with panoramic views of Lake Heritage and the Swartkop Mountain Range, as well as the swimming pool which doubles as a popular watering hole for the free-roaming zebra. The Zonky Bar and The Dam(n) Bar Heia Safari Ranch has a fully licensed African themed bar with a uniquely inverted thatched ceiling. The Dam(n) Bar is situated on the walls of the stone dam and offers guests the ideal spot from which to view myriad birdlife and enjoy a lazy sundowner.
ActivitiesLake Heritage is ideal for canoeing and is often the venue of choice for open water swimming events. Angling enthusiasts will enjoy the lake’s generous stock of fish for catch-and-release fishing. Bird-watchers are able to view over 100 recorded bird species as well as the resident pair of African Fish Eagles. A drive through the neighbouring game reserve allows visitors to see a multitude of wildlife namely rhino, buffalo, hippo, wildebeest, impala, kudu, giraffe and eland.
