Just 18km east of the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay along the renowned holiday destination of the Garden Route is Hog Hollow Country Lodge & Villas, set on the edge of indigenous forest with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and Tsitsikamma Mountains. If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live. – Lin Yutang (1895 – 1976)
Overlooking the Matjies River Gorge, this congenial hub is where it all happens. The Boma is a place for festive occasions and relaxing at day’s end, where guests relax on comfy chairs, a fire crackling nearby, and their favourite sundowner at hand. There are various lounge areas to escape to – with a book, a pair of binoculars, or just your thoughts. The reading room offers a quiet haven and a leafy vista of the indigenous forest valley and Tsitsikamma Mountains. If you’re a bird lover we advise you to head straight for the lounge where a fruit-laden Ficus tree is a favourite with Plett’s prolific bird community. The Boma area leads down to the cool blue waters of the swimming pool where you may find others lazing about on sun loungers. Kick off your shoes, order an icy drink from the bar and relaaaaax…
Hog Hollow is well known for its delectable food. A splendid buffet array awaits with all the little special treats and of course a bit of bubbly to begin the day..
Of course, there’s a seriously scrumptious variety in the hot breakfast section too. On crisp clear mornings, farmhouse breakfasts are served on the boma deck overlooking the forest and mountains or near the huge fireplace when it’s cooler. As the day ends and the full splendor of the African stars shine down on the deck, dinners start – out at the boma – in a festive atmosphere. After serving tasty little treats to whet the appetite, our hosts invite you in to wine and dine in the main house. “We have a little tradition at Hog Hollow …” the host begins … but you will have to come and visit us to see what it is! At the centre of the Main House is our famously large dining room table, where guests from various locales interact in a convivial setting. Needless to say, the conversation is never boring! If communal dining is not your thing, there are many lovely little areas where you can dine privately. Just ask your host.
The sixteen suites are all situated in the gardens surrounding the main house. Decorated in earthy colours, with hand crafted artefacts scattered throughout, all feature king size beds (or twin if you prefer), a well stocked mini bar and a hi-fi. Sit out on your private wooden deck listening to the sounds of a garden humming with life, enveloped in the warmth of the African sun.
No TV, but the view is better than Sky! A South African bed time story (don’t worry, we don’t test you!). A hot water bottle for those chilly winter evenings. Our homemade Lemon syrup (complete with recipe) – it’s deliciously refreshing. Hand-baked cookies in tightly sealed jars as the monkeys do LOVE to eat them too
There are three double storey suites suitable for families with children aged 12 or under sharing with their parents. Children are accommodated downstairs on a double sleeper couch and an ottoman, slightly shorter than a single bed but wider. We organise baby-sitting, special turn downs each evening with a glass of fresh milk, a Gingerbread man, children’s stories and a whole box of toys and other interesting things. And we have buckets and spades and body boards for those lazy family days at the beach. There is a communal TV in the Far Lounge at Hog Hollow, but none in the rooms and no fireplaces in the double storey suites!
The 3 bedroom, double storey, Main Villa at Hog Hollow is about 400m from the main lodge and still on our private nature reserve, with extraordinary views over the valley and Tsitsikamma Mountains. The house opens up on an infinity pool and wooden decks giving it an airy and light feel. The lounge (45m2) is spacious and sunny: comfortable leather furniture, drinks cabinet, music system, satellite TV and DVD player, fireplace and wooden deck area with magnificent views over the valley, forest and mountains.
KIDS AT THE VILLA
This is a perfect family holiday home.
Mum and Dad have the private master bedroom on the ground floor and the children have the upstairs area complete with a games room (35m2) sporting its own pool table, with a table tennis option and television with a whole pile of videos to choose from. The swimming pool does have a net covering – if you would like it on, let us know and it will be done.
A four-bedroomed mini-lodge 400 metres from the Lodge at Hog Hollow and next door to the three bedroomed villa. So while it’s completely private, it’s close to the rest of the lodge. Forest Lodge is ideal for small groups travelling and for families. Outside there is a wooden deck overlooking the mountains and forest which is perfect for sunny breakfasts. There is a 15x3m swimming pool with loungers and private sitting areas to enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings. The swimming pool is unfenced, so parents and/or guardians do need to ensure their children are strictly supervised at all times while in the pool vicinity.
There is an open plan lounge area, with a full DstV bouquet and fireplace downstairs for those cooler evenings and books to read & games to play. A fully stocked honesty bar, including an excellent selection of local wines. On request, guests can request a traditional South African braai (BBQ) – that does require 24 hours’ notice, and it’s HUGELY popular. Breakfast, dinners and lunches are served at the restaurant at the main Lodge at Hog Hollow.
The four spacious bedrooms, with equally spacious en-suite bathrooms (separate bath and shower), all have glorious views over the Tsitsikamma Mountains and indigenous forest. Two bedrooms are situated upstairs and two bedrooms are downstairs.
