Join Knysna RIB Adventures for an exciting adventure through the gorgeous Knysna estuaries and the infamous Knysna Heads as well as out to sea. For those don’t know, ‘RIB’ stands for Ridged Inflatable Boat. These boats are designed to take guests on a whirlwind boating adventure that is both fun and has a minimal impact on the environment due to its ultra-low emissions. On these exciting tours through the estuary, Knysna Heads and in the open ocean, guides are able to point out the vast array of bird and marine life found in this breath-taking location. If, in the unfortunate event that the conditions of the Knysna Heads are unsafe, your RIB adventure will continue down the Knysna estuary which has its own variety of scenery and birdlife. This is no ordinary lagoon cruise. The combination of the fun, fast-paced boating adventure and the exquisite scenery, where indigenous plant and animal life is abundant, provides guests with a unique experience that they will never forget.

Knysna RIB Adventures offers a unique combination eco adventure tour. You will find them docked directly outside of the Knysna Rib Adventures Kiosk in the Knysna Waterfront. Guests are required to be at the vessel 15 minutes prior to departure so that formalities including the signing of an indemnity form, seat assignments, safety briefing, lifejackets, payments and any other requirements can be confirmed. Waterproof jackets/windbreakers, warm clothing, Sunblock, sunglasses & hats etc are highly recommended but are not provided by Knysna RIB Adventures. Dry storage is available under the seats.
Knysna RIB Adventures are sensitive to the environment and operating within a National Park has chosen twin 4-stroke 300HP Suzuki engines which carry an international 3-star CARB rating for ultra-low emissions, which means that they provide a lot of fun with minimum impact on this natural wonder. The RIB adventures team have a good relationship and have a signed agreement with The Knysna National Parks Board to operate within the rules the entire length of the Knysna Estuary.
“Moonraker” is a custom designed Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) or “Rubber Duck” as they are commonly referred to by the locals and is one of the largest of her kind (9 meters/29.5 feet) in South Africa. She is powered by twin 4-stroke 300HP Suzuki engines and has achieved speeds of up to 53 knots (98 Km/h). She was specifically built for her intended use and with the infamous Knysna Heads in mind. She has great sea-keeping abilities an enormous amount of reserve power combined with extreme turning capabilities which allows her to turn between waves and out-run them should it be required. Massive re-enforced military grade pontoons with watertight compartments and a strengthened deep-V hull contribute towards a secure platform. All these features have produced a safe efficient passenger friendly vessel which takes care of its occupants. Knsyna RIB Adventures are commercially licensed by SAMSA (The South African Maritime Safety Association) to carry 12 passengers accommodated on individual jockey seats and 3 crew. They carry a full range of the latest safety equipment and navigational aids. The vessel is always captained by individuals holding the appropriate commercial certificates and more importantly having the necessary experience. She is professionally serviced and maintained by Lomar Marine.
Knysna RIB adventures offer a variety of boating experiences that guests can choose from:
120 minute Eco Adventure Trip:
A 2 hour trip through the infamous Knysna Heads on the 9 meter RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). Guests go past Ashmead on a high speed run, through the Featherbed and exit the Heads (conditions permitting). Once through the Heads, you will cruise along the coastline, keeping an eye out for the abundant marine life. You will also go into the sea-wards caves and be shown the rich diversity of the Knysna Coastline from an unique perspective, from outside the Heads, looking in. You will then head back and do a few high speed, thrilling turns to showcase the ability of 600 horsepower on the water before berthing back at the Knysna Waterfront.
60 minute Adventure Trip:
A great way to experience the unique diversity of the Knysna Estuarine. The trip will go past Ashmeads, Featherbed Bay and then exit the infamous Heads. From there you go past Noetzie, Cony Glen and back across to Brenton on Sea, Jaap se Baai and many other areas. With the RIB, guests get up close and personal with the myriad of sea caves and grottos and you experience a closeness to this unique area that is unmatched. Keeping an eye out for the abundant marine life.
30 minute “Heads Rush”:
Please note that this adventure is only available when the boat cannot exit the heads for groups larger than 20 people. On the days when the Heads are not passable due to inclement weather, guests can still travel to the Heads and then do a 30 minute cruise, showing you all the Hot Spots and interesting areas of the Knysna Estuarine. This trip will go to the Heads but then come back and cross under the bridge to show you the whole of the Estuarine from a unique perspective. A great way to experience the unique diversity of the Knysna Estuarine. The trip will go past Ashmeads, Featherbed Bay and then exit the infamous Heads. From there you go past Noetzie, Cony Glen and back across to Brenton on Sea, Jaap se Baai and many other areas. With the RIB, guests get up close and personal with the myriad of sea caves and grottos and you experience a closeness to this unique area that is unmatched. Additional trips are available on request. Trips out to sea are a minimum of 1 hour, but Knysna RIB Adventures also conduct trips of ½ hour and 1 hour on the lagoon if conditions do not permit a passage through the infamous Knysna Heads.
Early morning trips will be scheduled with pleasure, this also happens to be the best time of the day before the wind picks up. A sunset cruise up the river stopping at Crabs Creek along the way or catered with snacks and drinks from 34 Tapas and Oyster Bar. Anything is possible & can be arranged with prior notice.
Children’s parties, corporate events, private functions also can be arranged with prior notice. Knysna RIB Adventures are very flexible and are open to just about anything, just ask.
