A unique blend of luxury, nature, and activities! Sani Valley Lodge is a private nature lodge only 2 hours from Durban. It sits within the dramatic Drakensberg mountain range, borders a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the closest luxury lodge to the famous Sani Pass. The reserve has a very limited number of secluded luxury lodges designed to accommodate couples, families and small groups, all with the choice of full/ self-catering. Within the valley sits one of the largest privately owned lakes in South Africa. The lodges are scattered on the edge of the lake which is surrounded by a variety of antelope, zebra, baboons and other wildlife. This is one of the very few animal reserves in the Drakensberg, further enhanced by the vast lake which attracts unparalleled birdlife. The fishing is well renowned with regional records being attributed to the size of the lake. Enjoy the freedom of 260 acres of lake, surrounded by an abundance of wildlife and game. Sani Valley doesn’t have the big five, but you will be able to walk among the zebra, wildebeest, eland, springbok and many other antelope within its well-stocked boundary fence. Sani Valley offers some of best game viewing and bird watching in the Drakensberg region.
You can walk, ride horses, drive and explore over 1500 acres of Sani Valley’ s nature reserve enjoying the variety of indigenous fauna and flora and game. There are some wonderful vantage points around the reserve providing spectacular views, all of which reflect a beauty of tranquility and nature brought to life by the changing moods of shadows and light, all year round. You can also experience our very own vulture restaurant where up to 165 vultures have been sighted on occasion along with the sights and sounds of frogs, inserts, and calls of the wild from baboons, jackal, and raptors which echo off the mountains.
Be active on the lake
On the lake, you can experience a variety of boats for fishing or leisure paddling. You can also enjoy a refreshing swim during the warmer months of the year or relax and enjoy the shade from the clubhouse at the water’s edge. Order a spa massage to completely distress and energise your spirit while gazing onto the balancing rocks in the distance.
Go Fly Fishing
Sani Valley offers some of the most exciting Fly-Fishing opportunities from its annually well-stocked lake with some fantastic catches of over 10lbs of rainbow trout regularly reported. The lake has laid host to a couple of South African national fly fishing and provincial calendar events in the recent years too, demonstrating its respected trout fishing capabilities in the Underberg, Himeville area as well as Kwa Zulu Natal.
If you are looking for adventure the surrounding mountains offer hiking and mountain bike trails, Bushmen paintings, waterfalls, caves, 4×4 experiences and of course the famous Sani Pass linking Kwa Zulu Natal with Lesotho offering a passage to a Kingdom sitting at the roof of Africa. You can even experience Africa highest pub from the top of the Sani Pass, it’s certainly an experience you will never forget.
Enjoy Sani Valley
Be it as a newly married couple honeymooning or a quiet week/end escape with your partner, friends, and family, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Sani Valley offers dinner bed and breakfast. We don’t offer fine dining Micheline star chefs, but certainly, a range of great wholesome South African cooking is on offer for all occasion.
Sani Valley does an awesome South African breakfast served down at the Clubhouse on the water’s edge. Fresh trout out of the lake is a popular request at certain times of the year, and in Winter a wholesome meal of Oxtail stew sitting in your lodge in front of a cozy fire is very popular. All of these are put together for you in the privacy of your own lodge to help you enjoy the Sani Valley experience.
We have exclusive Honeymoon Lodges situated on the Lake, with Jacuzzis and “five-star” finishes, they are the ideal honeymoon getaway. Sunsets from your own “bath with a view” and sunrises from the king size bed will be difficult to forget. Privacy is paramount and tranquility is a given. Spar treatments on your deck overlooking the Southern Drakensberg Escarpment watching your partner sip champagne in the Jacuzzi is a honeymoon moment which is very hard to beat!
To ensure you have the Honeymoon that you dream of, please complete the questionnaire that we supply you when you make a booking. That way we know what interests you and how we can assist you in making your Honeymoon unforgettable. We make honeymoon packages tailored to each individual couple.
On arrival, you will receive a chilled bottle of Champagne and a box of irresistible chocolates to set the mood for your stay.
A Picnic lunch out on the boat, away from everyone is a lovely experience. When you eventually make it back to your lodge a quiet Jacuzzi before dinner (set up in your Lodge, with candles) whilst the sun sets over the lake will be a memory forever etched on your mind.
For the more adventurous, a game viewing ride on horseback or even a hike up to the Bushman Paintings should make you tired enough to enjoy a full body massage by our experienced masseurs on the deck overlooking the lake.
Whatever you can imagine, tell us and we will endeavor to make it happen.
