About Sani Pass Tours
Once, the Sani Pass was a rough mule trail descending the Eastern Highlands of old Basutoland into Natal. Tough drovers brought wool and mohair down the Pass on donkeys and mules to be exchanged for blankets, clothing and maize meal. The essentials for life in a remote and impoverished country.
A young man had a dream of operating a motor vehicle service up this fantastic Pass, using the 4 wheel drive vehicles he had seen on service in the second World War. His name was David Alexander and he founded this Company in 1955. It has operated on the Sani Pass ever since.

Looking to explore the Southern Drakensberg area on a motorbike? Should you be visiting the area and haven’t been able to bring your motorbike along … look no further!
Sani Pass Tours in conjunction with Alfie Cox, has launched a separate company, Sani Pass Motorbike Adventures, which offers motorbike hire as well as the necessary kit.
You will be required to have a motorbike licence and riding experience. Unfortunately, no learners or licences will be acceptable. The bike hire is valid per day from 08h00 to 17h00. Indemnities and insurances and damage deposits will apply. The bikes are KTM690 Enduro and only single use (no lifting at any time)

Sani Pass Day Tour
The Sani Pass was once a bridal path which allowed Basotho folk to transport their wool and goods to and from the Eastern Highlands of Lesotho and KwaZulu Natal and today offer visitors the opportunity to experience the adventure of climbing to a height of 2874 meters above sea level in a 4X4 vehicle.
We meet at our office in the Trout Walk Centre at 09h00, alternatively, we can pick you up from your B&B or Hotel. The Tour departs at 09h30 and takes approx. 2.5 hours to reach the summit, stopping at breath taking view sites along the Sani Pass and the two border posts i.e. The South African Border Control and Lesotho Border Control.
Once at the Top of the Sani Pass, we enjoy lunch at the highest Pub in Africa – The Sani Mountain Lodge. Lunch varies from R55 – R150pp depending on your preference from the menu.
After lunch the Tour continues into a living Basotho village, where our experienced mountain guide will interest you on Lesotho and its people – the hardy mountainous Basotho folk. Traditional beer and homemade bread offered on request.
We wind down the Sani Pass after this cultural experience and arrive back in Underberg between 16h00- 16h30 depending on the wildlife spotted along the way.
Mokhotlong Day Tour
Mokhotlong town is 60km into Lesotho from the Sani Pass, and was once known as the most remote outpost under the British Empire rule. A bustling town with a local market which guests are welcome to enjoy in the centre of town.
Depart from our office at 08h00 (or collection on route, if applicable) in a four wheel drive vehicle and we head up the Sani Pass, stopping at breath-taking view sites and the two border posts.
Once we reach the summit we stop for tea at Sani Top Chalet (the highest pub in Africa), we then head up Black Mountain for a short walk to view Thabana Ntlenyana (the highest peak in Southern Africa). We then head down through the beautiful Sehonghong Valley into the remote trading town called Mokhotlong, we have lunch, view the rare Spiral Aloe (The National plant of Lesotho), have a look at the old buildings and get to see how the Basotho folk trade. We then head back to Sani Top for afternoon tea and a toilet stop before we head back down the Sani Pass to arrive in Underberg around 18h00.

Two Day and One Night Lesotho Tours
Looking to do the Sani Pass a second time or just want to take in the scenery a bit longer and spend one night at the top of the Pass, then this is for you! You will be able to book some Pony Trekking or Hiking on arrival as well.
We meet at our office at 09h00, alternatively we can pick you up from your B&B or Hotel. The tour departs at 09h30 and takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach the summit, climbing a grand 2874 meters above sea level. Stopping at breath taking view sites and the border posts.
Once at the top we visit a living Basotho Village, where our experienced mountain guide will interest you on Lesotho and the hardy mountainous Basotho folk.
After this interesting cultural experience we drive back to Sani Mountain Lodge (the highest pub in Africa) for lunch (lunch at own cost), we then book you in at the Lodge for dinner, bed and breakfast.
Should you wish to horse ride or go on a guided walk in the mountains in the afternoon or on the following morning, the Lodge will make all the necessary arrangements for you.
We meet you at Sani Top Chalet at around 13h30, have lunch (lunch at own cost) and then head back down the famous Sani Pass to be back in Underberg around 16h30.
The Saga Of The Sani Pass And Mokhotlong Tour
Combine both day tour options and spend a night in Mokhotlong and enjoy the vibe of this rural Basotho trading town.
Depart from Underberg (collection on route, if applicable) in a 4×4 vehicle at 08h00 and travel via the Sani Pass with a stop for early tea at Sani Top Chalet. We then travel up Black Mountain Pass for a short walk to a vantage point from where we view Thabana Ntlenyana – the highest peak in Southern Africa at 3482 meters above sea level. We then travel on to Mokhotlong via the stunningly beautiful Sehonghong Valley where we stop at “10 Riverside” for an ethnic Basotho experience which includes a visit to the Ngaka (traditional healer) and the artefact house. We then travel to Mokhotlong for dinner and to overnight.
After breakfast we drive through Mokhotlong (once billed as the most remote village in the British Empire) and stop for a short walk down the main road to view the rare Spiral Aloe (The National plant of Lesotho). We then travel to St James Mission to see the fascinating ceiling of their church. We then drive back up the Sehonghong Valley, looking for the rare Bearded Vulture on route. Once we reach Sani Top, we go for lunch at Sani Top Chalet before descending the Sani Pass back to Underberg.

Passes and Culture – 4 Days 3 Nights
Travel through the Eastern Highlands of Lesotho, discovering special treasures along the way.
Depart from Underberg travel up the Sani Pass to the Kingdom of Lesotho. A mid morning stop at Sani Mountain Lodge (the highest pub in Africa) for brunch and tea/coffee. A further 18 kilometres and 450 meters up brings us to the top of Kotisepola “Black Mountain ” to view Thabana Ntlenyana the highest peak in Southern Africa. Then on to number 10 Riverside for an introduction to Basotho Culture, visit an Ngaka “traditional healer” and the artefact house. The day ends at St James Mission for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast we head west towards St Theresa’s. We travel through the Linakaneng (Dinakaneng) Valley to the Sani River, just sit back, relax and enjoy the amazing new views. Once we reach St Theresa’s we will meet Father Gabriel who will give us a comparative look at Western versus traditional medicine, from a Roman Catholic point of view. We take a short drive to Mashai Guest Lodge for dinner and to overnight.
After breakfast we depart Mashai and travel Southwards experiencing our very own “African Massage”, we stop for lunch in the “gardens”next to the river, we see ancient rock art and get to view the rare Spiral Aloe (The National plant of Lesotho). We then travel through to Sehlabathebe National Park where we have dinner and overnight.
Before and after breakfast we have time for a walk in the awesome park, viewing spectacular natural sandstone arches and unique plant life. We then head back to Underberg via Ramatislitso Gate border post and through the Eastern Cape, stopping for lunch along the way or in Underberg.
Best of Lesotho – 3 Days/ 2 Nights
Enjoy the splendour of Katse Dam – an engineering success! View the rare and beautiful spiral aloe (The National plant of Lesotho) and other magical experiences of Lesotho.
Depart from Underberg (or collection en route, if applicable) in a 4×4 vehicle at 08h00 and travel via the Sani Pass with a stop for early tea at Sani Top Chalet. We then travel on to Black Mountain Pass. A short walk will take us to vantage point to view Thabana Ntlenyana – the highest peak in Southern Africa at 3482m. After breakfast we depart from Mokhotlong across the roof of Africa and travel down the Moteng Pass to Liphofung a cultural and historical site of the San people and later, the Basotho. We continue on via Leriba (for good crafts) to Katse Lodge. We stop at Bokong Nature Reserve where beauty and serenity lie within the waterfalls. We have dinner and overnight at Katse Lodge.
After breakfast we visit the Interpretive Centre and go on a tour of the Katse Dam wall. After the tour we travel via Thaba Tseka, Linakaneng and St James Mission to Sani Top Chalet (the highest pub in Africa) where we have dinner and overnight.
We have a sunrise breakfast on the deck of Sani Top Chalet (weather permitting) overlooking KwaZulu-Natal, before we descend the Sani Pass back into Underberg.
