Caving and Abseiling!
From abseiling into a dark cavern, to caving to abseiling and hiking in the open air of the Magaliesburg
Wild Cave Adventures is a family-run business in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage area. We operate in the wild caves on the West Rand and cater for adventure seekers looking for opportunities to explore extreme areas safely. At the same time, and more importantly, we use these excursions to develop public awareness of environmental preservation. A few years back, as part of Emergency and Disaster Management in the area, it became obvious that many people were quite prepared to put themselves at risk using poor equipment with no safety measures in place, whatsoever. Some even arrived with candles for light and a dangerously thin rope and expected to find their way through a 4 400sqm cave! The cave environment – even of those caves dynamited by lime miners in the 1800s – was being jeopardized by the uninformed adventure-seeker. Ignorance is at the root of most cave damage.

There was room for someone prepared to take on the management of certain caves – keeping the surrounds clean, the seasonal owl babies safe and the inner caves clear of chip packets and human sewage. Neil became caretaker of these caves and even now, it is still a constant battle to stop people dumping waste in the entrance zone; taking rocks for their water features and eating, drinking and spraying graffiti down in the inner caves.
Not all experienced cavers are good teachers – one can be an accomplished caver and still a poor communicator. By ensuring that those coming on our excursions become safety – conscious and more environmentally aware, Wild Cave Adventures is assured that caves will remain open to future cavers. If we lose the caves, we lose caving!
Caves can damage cavers, but far more often it is the other way around. Broken bones will heal, but snap off a cave formation and it is gone forever with thousands, maybe millions of years of history wiped out in a single act of vandalism. We do, however, rate safety aspects of caving very highly with First Aid, High-Angle Rope Rescue qualifications and access to the Emergency and Disaster network close at hand.
These caves/abseils cater for the adventure-seeker looking for an opportunity to explore extreme areas safely. At the same time, we use these excursions to develop public awareness of environmental preservation.
We run guided excursions on demand for a minimum of 8, so it is necessary to book telephonically or via e-mail beforehand.
Either the interested party puts together a tour group, or we take contact details and join the various numbers together where possible.
Group caving weekends are available on request, with at least three caving/abseiling activities. Each weekend is specifically designed to suit a group’s requirement.
Team building and adrenaline adventures are also available on request for large corporate groups.
CHALLENGES EVERY COMPANY FACES:
• Not every member of a company is a mad adventure-loving person wanting to jump out of planes or bungee jump. Through past experience, just the mere suggestion of having to go out and do something different with one’s company, has many breaking out in a cold sweat and deciding to skip the day entirely.
• Often just one individual dealing with irrational fears can put a dampener on the event, as these individuals affect everyone around them.
• Obviously, the bigger the group, the more chance there is that not everyone in the group is going to cope with extreme activities.
• Many Corporate Fundays are not as successful as they could be, because service providers do not always cater to everyone.
SO… WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITHOUT LOSING THE EDGE!
This is corporate teamwork at its best- a company undertakes to complete a number of community projects. From gutters to gardens to painting to making over children’s rooms – anything is possible.
Once a company is committed to completing specific projects, materials are ordered and a team of workers goes in to set everything up for ” D day”. D day is when the company arrives en masse to complete the makeover. Wild Cave Adventures provides the expert supervision and the company provides the workforce.
By the end of the day, the tasks are all completed and nothing beats the look on the faces of those receiving the makeover….everyone is left with a great sense of achievement.
CORPORATE ADRENALINE CHALLENGE (best for numbers greater than twenty)
Many companies are filled with average people whose idea of adventure is reading a spy thriller! Keeping these people in mind, we have designed a package with a sense of competitiveness BUT with no pressure to get people to get out of ‘comfort zones’.We do, however, guarantee that everyone comes away having experienced something unique and memorable.
HOW THE CHALLENGE WORKS:
This is based on the “AMAZING RACE” experience. Teams are divided up well before the time. It is preferable that someone at the company sorts out the teams so that the adrenaline junkies and couch potatoes are evenly distributed. It has also proved successful to put people together who have never worked together. Friends pitted against each other, makes for a lot of evil fun!
Teams face the challenge of deciding which tasks and activities suit the capabilities of their teammates. So… the more adventurous members undertake the more physically challenging activities, and the other members take on the other tasks. In this way, everyone is catered for and does not feel pressurized in any way, other than helping their team to complete these fun challenge as smoothly as possible.
The cost per competitor is worked out on providing all equipment, entrance fees, guides/facilitators and all pre-production that is crucial for the day’s success.
a high tech component to the event with the company providing a cell phone per team can be introduced. At least one of the locations would rely on high tech communications to find it.
There are two options depending on budget:-
EITHER the members of the teams travel in their own vehicles to a central location, park and then use 2 of their own vehicles to take them on the race. Everyone can then be dropped off afterward for the drive home.
OR the company hires combis with a driver in each to transport the teams.
